Bleary eyes strain against the brightness of your phone screen, thumb on auto-pilot as you scroll through a never-ending stream of memes, photos of avocado on toast, and newborn babies of people you’ve not spoken to since school. You reach the bottom of your feed and swipe down to refresh the page because heaven forbid, you may have missed something in the past eight seconds.

Sound familiar?

I thought so.

Research estimates that the average person spends roughly 2 hours and 22 minutes per day on social media platforms, up from 90 minutes in 2012. Unsurprisingly, 16–24-year-olds report the highest usage, clocking up to three hours a day. That’s roughly forty-five days a year spent online.

So what?

Nobody bats an eye at someone enjoying a drink or two on a Friday night.

But if you were knocking back a bottle of vodka every evening, would that be okay?

Social media is the same.

It is an incredible tool — but like alcohol, if used to excess, it can become highly addictive, can negatively affect your relationships, and have a significant impact on your health — both mental and physical. The evidence of a link…
