Empty.

If somebody put a gun to my head and asked me to describe how I’ve felt for the last eight months in a single word, that’s the word I would choose.

For a while, I thought that I was simply ‘feeling a bit down,’ and that I’d pushed myself too hard at work. I was sure I would bounce back to my normal self before too long.

But ‘feeling down’ couldn’t explain the sense of overwhelming hopelessness I felt. It couldn’t explain why I suddenly felt no pleasure in any of the things I enjoy doing, or why I often found myself crying, for seemingly no reason at all.

Now I know that I was simply afraid of admitting the truth — I was depressed.

It’s an ugly word, isn’t it?

People don’t like to talk about it, which is odd, because it affects roughly 10% of Americans every year. If you’re reading this, the chances are pretty good that you’re someone who is/has struggled with it in the past, or you know somebody who has.

Either way, you’re hoping to find something that might help to overcome it.

I write about writing, self-help, personal finance. Pretty much anything that tickles my pickle. Sometimes I even know what I'm talking about.
