The article is actually a little outdated — at the time of writing, writers were able to select whether or not the article would be submitted for curation. If an article was curated, you’d receive a notification and/or an email from Medium telling you it had been selected for further distribution, and what topics it would be distributed under.

With the recent changes over the last month or so, every story published on Medium is eligible for further distribution. You can find more information about the recent changes here, and Medium’s updated Distribution guidelines here.
